Hong Kong - Shopping at a Whole New Level

friday, april 11th was scheduled for parent/teacher interviews and as a result we had (very) early dismissal (okay, we actually got the afternoon off!). regardless, we decided to use the extra bit of weekend time to head over to hong kong and really explore what the city has to offer. i honestly think you could go a weekend a month for, well, a year, and still have things on your list left to see or do.

friday night we kicked around in the mid-levels/soho area - very cool district, rather like kensington - had a great thai supper (so good in fact that i "purposely" left my sweater that evening so we would "have to" go back the next and get it. one must do what one must do under the circumstances. in this area is the world's longest escalator which, OH NO, we didn't use - we just went up the stairs beside it ... am i sounding bitter? ... it actually didn't get hard until it was time to turn around and go back down - i think a few murmurings did escape my lips then, all by accident of course, and certainly not directed towards any "one" person, no siree!!! we stayed overnight at the ibis in north point, which is cantonese for "smallest enclosed space one can find" - but it was very clean and really, once we got off the MTR (metro) it was less than 50 yards away ... author's note: this becomes an important feature in the next paragraph.

saturday we wanted to go for a run, but did not want to do more than 12 miles/2 hours (had done enough longer runs in a row and really needed a rest). dave had mapped out a course that took in several great parts of the city, but once we started out we quickly deviated from it. got up to victoria peak (note that i did not say we "ran" up the route - we had a very good pace indeed, but it was certainly not running! it was very overcast, ya, that's what we'll say it was, "overcast" - there was no visibility to be had, so just poked around to see what restaurants/shops they had to offer (it was too early in the morning so nothing was open) except that is, the gelato shop. now how can one pass that by i ask? not EITHER OF US.
our descent proved to be rather interesting, saw LOTS, saw one particular hotel 3 TIMES ... after about 3.5 hours and third sighting of this hotel, 2nd sighting of the jockey club (which is absolutely enormous in itself) one of us (whom shall remain nameless) got the good sense to flag down a policeman and ask for directions. when i, oops i meant to say "no one in particular" was explaining where our hotel was, he looked very shocked and said "and you want to run there? oh, very, very far!". but then you must consider that any distance over a block and a half is considered "very far" and then to add in the heat factor ... WELL! we made it to the metro station that was 2 stops away from our hotel and jumped on ... i might add that it did not take long for us to be left alone in isolation - again, i must say "no one in particular" STUNK!!!

after recovering (somewhat) from our run we took a double decker bus out to stanley market and toodled around there abit. very pretty area, but the bus ride gave us the better experience. the roads were very, very narrow, very windy witih lots of traffic and lots of very tight turns. being on the top deck proved to give an interesting feel to the ride, there was a LOT of swaying and you always felt like maybe the bus really was going to topple over! headed back to central to retrieve said sweater and this time (THANKFULLY) actually rode the escalator up to a great little mexican restaurant in soho.
we had an early supper by hong kong standards and i just had to giggle when at 6:30 pm as we were finishing up i realized i was absolutely dead and had no desire to do anything than make our way back to the hotel. a few shops did call out to us though, and then we decided to check out the night market on temple street. now that is one place you do not want to do with low energy!

sunday was left for shopping (of the more serious nature) and WHAT A DELIGHT THAT WAS! found a new "favorite store" called zara, it is the very first place i have found where you actually will have to go home and have your pants hemmed. got the most gorgeous suit which will be great for winter here or anytime back home! i can well imagine that by now most everyone is tuned out ... or "clicked on" to better things. so without further adieu ...
